Our Story

We make everyday things out of stone, because stone is the one material that gets better the longer you leave it alone.

Slate Online began with a single offcut board bought from a quarry yard and pressed into service as a cheese board. Ten years on it is darker, faintly scratched, and better looking than the day it arrived. That is the whole idea. We sell pieces that are finished rather than protected, and that take on the marks of being used without ever looking worn out.

How we choose material

Our slate is split rather than sawn wherever the piece allows it, which is why the edges are irregular and no two boards match. Cast stone is used where a shape has to be repeated exactly. Brass is left unlacquered so it dulls honestly instead of flaking. Nothing is coated in a finish designed to look new forever.

A small range, on purpose

We keep the catalogue deliberately short. Every piece has to be something we would keep on the counter rather than in a cupboard, and it has to survive being handled every day. If a design does not earn that, we do not stock it.

Everything ships from the United States, packed by hand, usually within a day.
